The legendary flying plum tree, a symbol of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

The sacred tree “Tobi-Ume” is located to the right of the main hall. When Sugawara no Michizane was unjustly exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu, he bid farewell to the plum tree at his residence with poem, “When the east wind blows, let it send your fragrance, oh plum blossoms. Though your master is gone, do not forget the spring.” The plum tree, yearning for Michizane, is said to have flown to Dazaifu onvernight. Since then, it has been named Tobi-Ume and is reserved as a sacred tree. It blooms earlier than other plum treen in the precincts, heralding the arrival of spring.

Enjoy the seasonal expressions of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
